ThéMA (Theory and models for urban and regional planning) is a research centre, which associates the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the universities of Franche-Comté and of Bourgogne.

ThéMA comprises two sites, one in Dijon and one in Besançon (main site).

ThéMA is a pluridisciplinary research centre, which brings together geographers, economists, computer scientists and civilisationists.

Created in 1994, the research centre emerged from the progressive federation of 5 research teams.

• At the beginning, the research team "Environment and landscape" (Laboratoire Environnement et Paysage) and the "Research Institute for analysing spatial and economical dynamics" (Institut de recherche et d’analyse des dynamiques économiques et spatiale)

• In 1996, the laboratory of Human Geography of Dijon

• In 2003, the technology research team "Méthodologies et Technologies de l’information appliquées aux Sciences de l’Homme (MTI@SHS)"

• In 2003, the Research Centre on Human and Urban Space (CREHU)
